Origins and Establishment
The Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abuja, was officially established on June 7, 2012, and later fully commissioned on January 28, 2013, by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Its creation marked a major milestone in strengthening healthcare delivery within the Federal Capital Territory.
The hospital project originated from agreements reached during the China–Africa Cooperation Forum Beijing Summit held in June 2008. During this summit, the government of the People’s Republic of China offered support to Nigeria in building and equipping one comprehensive hospital along with four rural primary schools.
To formalize the partnership, the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria signed a memorandum of understanding with the Federal Ministry of Health Nigeria. This agreement was later reaffirmed by Nigeria’s National Planning Commission, emphasizing that the proposed 150-bed hospital would replace the congested Federal Staff Hospital in Garki II and significantly expand healthcare capacity in the capital.
Planning, Construction, and Handover
To bring the project to life, approximately 4.85 hectares of land were secured for the facility. The Federal Ministry of Health provided key infrastructure support, including potable water, electricity, and temporary access roads. The Ministry also assisted Chinese engineers with residency permits and accommodation for a two-year period to ensure smooth project execution.
The official foundation stone laying ceremony took place on May 20, 2010. Construction progressed efficiently, and the hospital was completed within two years. Upon completion, the former Federal Staff Hospital in Garki II relocated to the new site on June 7, 2012 — the same date recognized as the establishment day of the Centre.
Early Challenges and Institutional Growth
Like many new large-scale public institutions, FMC Abuja faced initial challenges — particularly in infrastructure expansion and manpower development. However, the commitment of its pioneer management team and the dedication of highly skilled healthcare professionals helped the Centre overcome these early obstacles.
Through consistent leadership and professional excellence, the Medical Centre experienced rapid growth and institutional development. Over time, it evolved beyond a general hospital into a recognized postgraduate training centre, with multiple institutional divisions, clinical departments, and subspecialty units.
